Yuri Smaguin was born in 1937 in Irkutsk, Siberia (Russia). In 1965 he graduated from Irkutsk Art College and went to St. Petersburg.
In 1971 he entered from St. Petersburg Academy of Decorative and Apply Arts (former Mukhina's Apply Arts Institute) and returned to his native Irkutsk.
